The writer delves in the late twentieth century to examine several Muslim Arab thinkers published treatises that labeled Christian missionary activities in the Middle East as part of a Western imperial crusade against Islam. Sharkey examines more than twenty Arabic antimissionary treatises that suggest provisional answers to the questions posed above about the genre’s popular appeal and its sources of anger or anguish, with interesting conclusions about the responses in the Arab world.
