The purpose of this study is to focus on American Protestant missionary activity in Syria especially among the Alawis who, up until the twentieth century, were known by the locals and the Westerners as Nusayris. This study examines the aims, methods and results of the Protestant missionary activity among the Nusayris and the impact of their presence and work in these districts upon the Ottoman authorities and their dealings with the Nusayris.
