The First Protestants in the Arab World: the contribution to Christian mission of the English Aleppo chaplains ( 1597-1782)

The thesis is focused on the history of the Aleppo chaplains, particularly interesting because of their location in the Middle East, with its unique challenges for Christian mission. The writer attempts to fill a vast unexplored field of mission histories of the Middle East, drawing evidence from known church historians who have acknowledged the existence of the Aleppo chaplains, inspired by the religious usages and ideas of the seventeenth century English as well as to explore ways to strengthen British foreign chaplaincies in the Middle East. The thesis argues that these particular chaplains deserve attention at describing and assessing their work to enrich protestant missiology over the two centuries prior to the Evangelical Revival and the subsequent Great Era of Protestant missions.
