The book focuses on the relations between Islam and Christianity and the development of Islam in Anatolia in this formative period from the Turkish invasions to the early Ottoman period (c.1071–1400). It aims to reassess work in the field of interfaith relations in medieval Anatolia and broaden the source base beyond the scant Muslim chronicles in Persian which exist for the period, since only individual aspects of Christian-Muslim relations have appeared. The first group of essays examines the Christian experience of living under Muslim rule while the second set describes encounters between Christianity and Islam in art and intellectual life and the final section focusses on the process of Islamisation.
