Iraqi President Latif Rashid met with a high-level Christian delegation led by Antiochian Patriarch of the Syriac Catholics and a number of faith leaders from Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon to stress the importance of the peaceful coexistence of all faiths in the country.
"Christians of the East are the original inhabitants of the region along with the rest of the social components, and that segregation was perpetuated by the enemies of humanity," Latif said in a statement his media office issued on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the Iraqi president also underlined the growing need for all political parties to protect the security and stability the country has recently witnessed, and called for continued dialogue to resolve political differences. He also highlighted the interfaith harmony that exists between all ethnic and religious backgrounds across the country.
"The outstanding problems must be resolved through constructive dialogue," Latif stressed, adding that "the existing problems are not insurmountable and can be solved."
Iraq suffered immeasurably from a widespread bloody insurgency following its invasion in 2003, and then from a war against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group that overran much of the Nineveh province in 2014.
The country was also recently plunged into a currency crisis causing a nationwide inflation, which has just begun showing signs of improvement following reassurances from the US government. Baghdad and Erbil have also been often at loggerheads over control of natural resources, and the latter's share of the federal budget.
