The article discusses the relationship of American Protestant missionaries, Great Britain and local communities, such as the Druzes, while examining the interaction with other regional actors, such as the French, the Jesuits, the Maronite authorities, the Russians and the Greek Orthodox. The writer eloquently describes the dynamics that developed from the beginning of the Protestant presence in Syria, that took place in a turbulent period.
