The writer aims to indicate in broad outline the nature of Syrian Christian participation in the formative phase of Islamic civilization, describe and analyze in some detail the alterations in the condition and their prospects during the disintegrative phase of Ottoman Islamic civilization as Ottoman collapse seemed to compel the eastern Arab world to develop non-Islamic norms of political and social organization. At the same time, the various maneuvers of Western powers to gain influence through the protection afforded to certain Christian groups are adequately covered. Haddad has compiled an essay that delineates the part played by Syrian Christians in the modernization and secularization of Muslim society and institutions.
