The article builds an argument by reviewing five studies on Christian missions in the Middle East and the Ottoman Balkans published from 2008 until 2014. The writer contends that the recent historiography on Christian missions to the Middle East has seen a profound change in approach, methodology, and sources and locates three main shifts: a national to a transnational approach, a reevaluation of local agency, and a new emphasis on unintended consequences.
