This article studies the status of the Coptic community in Egyptian politics throughout the twentieth century and up until the Mubarak regime. Emphasis is attributed to the relations with the WAFD party, and the regimes of Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak. Additionally, the state of the Coptic Church and its relationship with the Egyptian heads of state is highlighted in order to accentuate the special role it had obtained and maintained as a representative of the Coptic community of Egypt.
