US senators urge Egypt to take action in case of detained Christian activist

A pair of bipartisan senators called on the Egyptian government to take action in the case of an imprisoned Egyptian human rights activist amid allegations of torture and increasing health concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis and Democrat Chris Coons, co-chairs of the Senate Human Rights Caucus, sent a letter to the Egyptian embassy in Washington last month, The Hill reported on Friday, advocating on behalf of Ramy Kamel, who has been imprisoned since November 2019.

Egyptian authorities have arrested eight people following clashes that erupted on Wednesday evening between Muslims and Coptic Christians in the Minya governorate, reported local and foreign media on Thursday.
The Egyptian authorities have not yet commented on the media reports.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported on Thursday that the authorities in Egypt are detaining a number of people in a village in the Minya governorate following clashes between Muslims and Copts.
Cairo 24 quoted a security source stating that the Central Security Forces of the Ministry of the Interior intervened to control the situation in the village of Deir El-Bersha.

The Coptic Orthodox Church totally rejects insults directed towards any religions, said Church Spokesperson Boulos Halim in response to a recent spat between a Christian and a Muslim which ended in their arrest.
On Friday, prosecutors ordered the detention of Youssef Hany, an 18-year-old Christian student in the second grade of the Faculty of Arts at Suez Canal University, and a Muslim woman arrested for slandering the Christian faith for four days pending investigations.

"Everyone receives a gift from God 24 hours a day", said the Patriarch and if you spend most of your life in social networks, as happens to so many young people, you end up wrecking this treasure. In our time - Pope Tawadros acknowledged - "every person cannot help but use modern technological devices in their daily life. But this use must be done wisely and without excesses".

Egypt's Coptic Orthodox churches will suspend masses and other services in Cairo and Alexandria starting Monday for one month due to rising numbers of coronavirus cases detected among clergymen and churchgoers.
According to an official statement released by the Coptic Orthodox Church on Saturday, Sunday's schools, meetings, services and masses will be also be suspended.
Priests in every church will be allowed to hold only one mass weekly in the presence of a maximum of five deacons only.

Alexandria Patriarchate to house new Coptic museum in 2021

The Greek archaeological mission in charge of restoring the Patriarchate building and its courtyard will open a Coptic museum in the courtyard in 2021, General Undersecretary of the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Alexandria, Abram Emil, said.
Construction was scheduled to start before the coronavirus outbreak, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Emil told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Thursday the museum will include important collections of the cathedral’s ancient holdings, most notably a number of historical Bibles, old books and some vessels used in church prayers.
