Event: International Workshop on Christianity in the Middle East | October 21, 2022

CME organised an international workshop in Athens (Hill 3-5, 10558) on Friday, October 21, 2022, to promote an academic discussion on Christianity and Religious Pluralism in the modern Middle East. Experts on international politics and religion addressed the various aspects of the current situation of Christians in the region.

Professor Sotiris Roussos, in his opening address, introduced the workshop’s themes and emphasized the importance of the issues and the need to further explore the complexities of the various religious communities in the Middle East. The workshop aimed to offer the opportunity for open academic dialogue, wherein scholars could present different views on the historical, political, and social implications of religious pluralism for Christian communities in the Middle East.

Based on their expertise and experience in the fields of religion, history and international politics, the panelists presented their research and papers while addressing various aspects with regards to religious pluralism and coexistence in the modern Middle East. The first session focused on the different religious communities in the Middle East, where the panelists discussed their evolution over time and highlighted the challenges that Christian communities face in the Middle East. The second session explored Middle Eastern Christians and the World, as panelists discussed the impact of political instability, conflict, and war on Christian communities in the region. They also examined the role of regional and international actors in shaping the political landscape and its impact on religious minorities. The third session focused on the political implications of religion in the Middle East, in addition to considering religious pluralism in the region. The panelists discussed the challenges and opportunities for Christian communities in the Middle East in engaging with and contributing to the social and cultural life of the region.
The workshop concluded with remarks by Professor Roussos, who discussed the need for political engagement to promote the rights and freedoms of religious minorities in the Middle East and emphasized the need for a platform in Greece where scholars could promote research on Christian communities in the region.
