The book is based on the importance that the writer places of the first half of the nineteenth century as the formative period for the modern missionary movement and the role of the Europeans. Using clerical archives, Paul Sedra focuses on the impact of the missionizing project, including Muhammad ʿAli’s period in Egypt and that of other powerful groups as well. It is argued that Christianity is made to fit the needs of groups that managed to accumulate power and influence in the country and introduces the patriarch and the Coptic notables as part of the power structure, examining their relationship to the missions.
