The aim of the book is to address the tensions between the Coptic Church and Coptic laicity in Egypt with regards to their status within society and the way that the state considers them. As such, the author examines events of sectarian violence, radicalism as well as the relationships between the different Egyptian heads of state with the Coptic Popes throughout the decades, Pope Shenouda in particular. As a result, the book focuses on the societal aftermath of the special relationship attributed to that with the Coptic Church, as enabling sectarianism within Egyptican society. .
