The article refers to the history of the Church Missionary Society in the northern Sudan, as it yields insights into issues of education, power and religious identity within a colonial context. Starting from its arrival in 1899, the author describes the process of its establishment, including the missionaries’ medical and education services in urban centers and in the Nuba Mountains, and in girls' schools along with the status of literacy that the Sudanese managed to achieve.
