This volume is presenting the major interdisciplinary research project of Leiden university into identity formation of the Syriac Orthodox, along with the contributions presented at the Oud Poelgeest symposium in 2007. As many Christian communities in the Middle East currently express nationalist aspirations, stressing the non-religious elements of their ethnic identity, the scope of this joint effort is to examine whether a religious choice could be the starting point of an ethnic community and eventually, a nation. The volume utilized the new tools and terminologies offered by the recent developments in social studies, and examine the identity formation and the importance of religion in its process primarily in the first millennium, searching for continuities in the present.
