The papers included in the books touch on aspects of the encounters between Christians and Muslims in Greater Syria from the beginnings of Islam to the eighth/fourteenth century, and show the great complexity of interactions between the faiths, the considerable intellectual interdependence that developed between them, and the continuing polemical edge that persisted in the written records they produced. The edition seems to suggest that it is that Christianity reacted quickly to the Muslim presence, and came gradually to respond and accommodate to its increasing cultural and intellectual influence, though it never lost confidence in its own patrimony and preserved this with firmness and verve.
